Eileen Flannigan
aka Shmileen
Tell us the story of how you and Dani met, and what inspired you to work with Special Gathering.
Dani and I met while enrolled at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC in 1993. We were instantly connected through our matched wit and humor, zest for life, and love of exploring and celebrating creative counterculture scenes, especially music and art. As classmates in the FIT Advertising and Communications program, we collaborated closely on projects and productions, developing a dynamic, imaginative partnership and flourishing friendship that has been celebrated for over 30 years.
Special Gathering's commitment to philanthropic pursuits syncs perfectly with my personal core values on every level, inspiring and challenging me to push hard for positive change in crucial societal movements.
What would you consider to be your unique superpower, and how do you utilize it in your role at Special Gathering to enhance your contributions and the overall success of the team?
I am a creative, deep thinker with an open mind who thrives on shared learning and meaningful connections with others. I am also a cool curator who thoughtfully presents experiences, blending creativity with a unique perspective to inspire and engage others. I aspire to bring kindness and care into all of my interactions in life. I specialize in attentive and intuitive listening and enjoy resonating important liaisons to build successful partnerships and progressive projects that generate innovation and impact.
How have your personal experiences shaped your passion for working closely with events that promote racial equity and social justice, and what drives you to continue this important work?
I was raised with a deep sense of justice and social responsibility to ensure we strive to right the wrongs of our collective society while continually stewarding hope, progress, and remediation. I believe that we are here to help others, and we must be the voice for those silenced, denied, and violated in this life. To aid in this continual challenge is not only a responsibility; it’s an honor.
What is the one thing you enjoy most about the Special Gathering team culture?
There is a magic that ignites when we unite in deep, purposeful work to positively impact others. SG naturally shines and aligns with momentous humanitarians and trailblazers, creating elevated experiences that have a lasting impact and benefit to those most in need. To be a part of this mission fills me with pride and humility. The SG crew bands together to drive this quest from the heart, pushing shared values to grow and build robust community commitment while uplifting and elevating our spirits to be our best selves.
What's your favorite way to spend the weekend?
Spending time in nature while engaging in spiritual gratitude and reflection rejuvenates me. I love to take meditative and explorative hikes with my dogs, spend time with family and friends, listen to music, sing, and dance. I love to meet and engage with people and thrive on humor and laughter. These simple yet powerful practices help me strive towards mental balance and elevation while pushing for peace and ease to smile through struggles.
