At Special Gathering, our core mission is to create a space that is mindful of the different ways we learn, move, and engage in this world- physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We believe in designing environments that are both physically accessible and foster a sense of well-being for everyone.
We adhere to disability justice principles during conferences and events by prioritizing accessibility, inclusivity, and the dignity of people with disabilities. This commitment includes ensuring physical accessibility, providing various communication accommodations, and fostering a culture of respect and understanding. We recognize the diversity of experiences within the disability community and work towards solidarity among all people taking part in a convening.
When planning your next convening, consider the social model of disability, recognizing that societal structures create barriers rather than inherent limitations.
Here are a few ideas for creating intentionally mindful and - accessible spaces:
Physical Accessibility
Venue Selection that Ensures Clear Pathways:
Choose venues that are physically accessible, including ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms. Ensure smooth, uncluttered pathways and lighting for ease of movement, especially for individuals with mobility or visual accommodations.
Sensory Considerations While Prioritizing Safety:
Ensure the space is safe and free from hazards, with proper lighting, fire safety measures, and emergency exits. Design spaces with varying textures and lighting to cater to different sensory needs. For example, incorporating soft textures can be calming for some, while others might prefer minimal stimulation.
Accessibility Features:
Include features like ramps, automatic doors, and accessible restrooms to ensure inclusivity.
Creating Mindful Experiences
Designed to Flow:
Create spaces that encourage natural movement and flow, making it easy to navigate and find different areas for different activities.
Nature Integration:
Incorporate natural elements like plants, natural materials, and natural lighting to create a more serene and connected environment.
Calming Colors and Textures:
Use of soft, neutral colors and incorporate calming textures like wood, stone, and natural fabrics to create a soothing atmosphere.
Sensory Engagement:
Incorporate elements that engage the senses, such as gentle music, fragrant oils, or tactile objects.
Technology-Free Zones:
Establish designated technology-free areas to promote mindfulness and reduce distractions.
Communication Accessibility:
Sign Language Interpretation:
Provide sign language interpretation for all presentations and events.
Live Captioning:
Offer live captioning for presentations and other events.
Audio Descriptions:
Consider audio descriptions for visual presentations and events.
Large Print Materials:
Provide large print materials for attendees with visual impairments.
Assistive Listening Devices:
Offer assistive listening devices for those with hearing impairments.
The journey towards inclusivity begins with thoughtful planning and a commitment to understanding the diverse needs of our communities. Put into practice a few of these principles in the movement to create intentional, accessible, and mindful spaces.
